Meaning/Origin of the Flag

The flag of the in 1947 founded region of Liguria, shows three vertical stripes in green, red and blue. In the middle of the red field appears the emblem of the region: a stylized, silvery caravel with a large white sail, on it a big red cross and four silvery stars. The red cross goes back to the City and Republic of Genoa. Whose flag was from the ancient times a white flag with the red Cross of Saint George (George Cross). In the Napoleonic era, even as Ligurian Republic, this flag was retained. The four stars represent the four provinces of the region: Imperia, Savona, Genoa and La Spezia.

Origin of the Country's Name

The name "Liguria" has its roots in the tribe of the Ligurians, which settled here in the antiquity. The word is of Latin origin and comes from "ligere" what means "merge" or "connect", and refers possibly to the geographic location of the Ligurians as a link on the approach of the Italian Peninsula on the European mainland.
