Meaning/Origin of the Flag

The current state flag of Michigan was introduced on 1st of August in 1911. It shows a blue bunting with the state coat of arms on it. The light blue shield dates from 1832 and shows the rising sun above a lake and a peninsula, on the peninsula a man with his right hand raised (peace signal) and a weapon in his hand (signal for readiness to defend), a symbol of peace and the ability to defend one's rights. The motto "Tuebor" → "I will defend" appears in the head of the shield. The shield is held by an elk and a wapiti deer. They represent the animal kingdom and are considered symbols of Michigan. Above the shield is a bald eagle and a red banner with the motto: "E pluribus unum", both references to the USA. Below the shield is a white banner with the motto of Michigan: "Si quaeris peninsulam amoenam, circumspice" → "If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look around you". The flag of the state can be used by anyone. An identical flag had already been introduced in 1837 for military purposes.

Origin of the Country's Name

The name "Michigan" comes from the Indian word "mici gama," what means "big water", but initially that name was used only for the Lake Michigan.
