The today's flag of Indiana was created in 1917 by Paul Hadley, won a competition and was officially adopted on 31st of May in 1917. At that time it was square and was called the state banner, in 1955 the aspect ratio of the flag was adjusted to be 2:3 or 3:5. The flag is a dark blue bunting and shows a golden torch surrounded by an outer ring of thirteen golden stars. They represent the thirteen colonies that united to form the USA. An inner ring of six stars represents the states that followed until the entry of Indiana, with the large star standing for Indiana itself. The torch symbolises freedom and enlightenment.
