Meaning/Origin of the Flag

The flag of the USA is officially used on Wake. However, there is an unofficial flag since 1976. At that time, hundreds of members of the US Air Force lived on the island, as well as government agencies and civilian contract workers. Wake's unofficial flag was designed to commemorate the United States Bicentennial and features two horizontal stripes of white and red, and a vertical blue stripe on the pole that ends as a triangle towards the centre of the flag. Inside the bar is placed a golden disc with a stylised map of the archipelago and the name "Wake Island". The disc is surrounded by three golden stars. They represent the three main islands of the archipelago: Wake, Wilkes and Peale. The flag is said to intentionally resemble the flag of the Philippines because many civilian workers at the time came from there.
