Meaning/Origin of the Flag

The present flag of Nevada was introduced in this form on 26th of March in 1929 and modified in some details on 25 July 1991. It is a single-coloured cobalt blue bunting and shows a five-pointed silvery star in the upper corner (representing the state of Nevada), surrounded by a half wreath of two branches of sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata, Great Basin Sagebrush), Nevada's official state flower. The wreath is finished at the top with a golden banner with the words "Battle Born". These words are a reminder that Nevada joined the USA during the Civil War. However, this is not the official state motto, which is: "All For Our Country". The name of the country appears below the star. It was arranged around the silvery star until 1991. The star recalls the nickname of the state: "Silver State". The flag has its origins in a design competition that was organised in 1926 and won by Louis Shellback III. The flags used previously were dark blue, the same colour shade as the blue on the US flag, and both featured 36 stars, among other things, because Nevada was the 36th state to join the USA. The first state flag, from 1905 to 1915, not only showed the country's name in a central position, but also the words "Silver" and "Gold". The subsequent model, used from 1915 to 1929, showed, in addition to the 36 stars – in the centre, under the name of the state – an escutheon with a golden border and the motif of the state seal on it. Below the shield was the state motto: "All For Our Country".
