Of importance - at least from 1998 onwards - was the flag of the SPM (Somali Patriotic Movement), a militia made up of Ogadeni from the Darod clan. The Western Somali Liberation Front (also Ogadeni from the Darod clan) in the Ogaden region of Ethiopia uses the same flag. In 1999, the Juba Valley Alliance (JVA) brought Jubaland under its control, loyal to the central government in Mogadishu. Jubaland now even used the Somali flags. The JVA was driven out in 2006 by the "Union of Islamic Courts" (later Al-Shabab militia), which in turn was driven out in 2011, also by troops from Kenya. In the liberated areas, Jubaland now called itself Azania and used a white-light blue-red flag. From 2012, the country was again called Jubaland and on 28 August 2013 became a state of the newly proclaimed Federal Republic of Somalia and adopted a new flag. It features three horizontal stripes in green, light blue and white and a light blue triangle on the mast with a star in it. Under a yellow-red-green flag with a light blue triangle on the pole with a star in it, Somali exiles from the USA and Canada are trying to gain influence in Jubaland.

The name "Jubaland" has its roots in the name of the River Juba, which is historically the eastern border of the country.
