The unofficial flag of the Midway Islands was created in the year 2000 and shows an Albatross over the waters of the Pacific Ocean. The Midway Islands were and are meanwhile again a important brood colony for the albatrosses notably after 1997 – the year of closing of the US military base. The flag is an unofficial flag and it is allowed to doubt if it was ever in use or is in use. The islands are now a wildlife sanctuary.
1859 · discovery and exploration by an US-American seafarer, in the afteryears visits and settlement by poachers which eradicate nearly the whole population of albatrosses
1903 · construction of a sea cable relais-station on Sand Island by the navy of the USA, the poachers have to leave the islands
1936 · by the construction of a runway the Midway Islands are in use as stopover landing place for flight lines to the Philippines, improvement to an Air Force and Navy base of the USA
4th–7th of June 1942 · Second World War: Sea Battle near the Midway Islands, the USA break the maritim predominance of Japan in the Pacific Ocean
1997 · dissolution of the US military base, the islands become a wildlife sanctuary
