The flag of the Aaland Islands was adoped on the 7th of April 1954. It shows a yellow bordered red Scandinavian cross (= a cross, displaced to the pole-side – all scandinavian countries have as a sign of relationships and togetherness such a cross in their flags) on blue ground. The flag unites the colours of the flags and coats of arms of Finland and Sweden respectively. This way the Swedish yellow cross is easily indentified with the red Finnish red cross as an overlay (the Finnish coat of arms is red).
