Meaning/Origin of the Flag

Epirus did not join Greece until 1913 due to the consequences of the Balkan War of 1912/13. The region was previously for hundreds of years a part of Turkey. Within the population structure the share of Greeks is relatively low, thus Epirus has a very distinct culture. The flag is the Greek cross-flag.

395 · at the partition of the Roman Empire Epirus comes to the East Roman Empire (Byzantium)

1204 · temporary destruction of the East Roman Empire by crusaders, as Byzantine leftovers remain the Empire of Trapezunt, the Empire of Nikaia and the Despotate of Epirus

1393–1460 · conquest of the Despotate of Epirus by the Turks

1912–1913 · Balkan War, the Ottoman Empire has to leave its territories on the Balkan, Epirus becomes a part of Greece
