Meaning/Origin of the Flag

The flag of Rhineland-Palatinate was adoped in 1948. It shows the german tricolor, in the upper canton the coat of arms of the country. The coat of arms shows the heraldic symbols of the country-parts, the former election-principality Trier (red cross on white ground), the former election-principality Mainz (white wheel on red ground) and the Pfalz/Palatinate (golden lion on black ground). Over the blazon the "people's crown". The appearance and use of the flag were first laid down by law on 10th of May in 1948, confirmed in the State Law on Emblems of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate (Coat of Arms and Flag Law) of the 7th of August in 1972, GVBl 1972, p. 293, last amended by the Law of 21st of July in 2003, GVBl. p. 167. The flag of the Minister President – a 30x30 cm car standard – is no longer mentioned in the law and has probably not been used since 2003.
