The name of the state was the name of the capital. The city of Coburg was first mentioned in the 12th century as "Trufalisat". In 1217 the city was first mentioned as "Coburg".
About the name's origin is nothing known, but it is suspected a Slavic origin. The prefix "co" should come from "chov" which means "protection".
