The flag of Abruzzo is solid red – officially this should be burgundy red – and features the region's coat of arms in the centre. It was created in 1986 and shows a gold-edged shield divided diagonally from left to right, with white above green above blue. The white represents the snow-capped mountains, the green represents the hills and forests of the region, and the blue represents the Adriatic Sea. In 2022, the coat of arms was further modified, with a crown added and the figure of the "Warrior of Capestrano", an important regional archaeological find from the 6th century B.C., was placed in the centre. A blue banner was also added below the coat of arms with the motto: "Gentium Vel Fortissimarum Italiæ" ("To the bravest people of Italy"). The coat of arms was revised again at the end of 2023, with the crown removed and replaced by the words "Regione Abruzzo", the banner was recoloured in white (silver) and the warrior was heavily stylised.
