Meaning/Origin of the Flag

In the upper canton of the flag you can see a hand. It was the symbol of the abkhazian state in the 8.–10. cent. This is the hand of Fatima, a symbol of luck. The Combination of the colours white and green should symbolize the tolerance of the caucasian nations. The 7 stars are standing there for the 7 historical countrysides of Abkhazia. The Soviet Republic of Abkhazia used the usual red flags with hammer, sickle and star and various golden inscriptions or initials until 1951. The Georgian Soviet flag was used from 1951 to 1978, then the Georgian Soviet flag with its own gold initials below the emblem until 1991.
